Used to sail in Florida
(where you never worried which way the tide was going) then moved to Bellingham. Sailed once against the tide. Passed the same buoy three times. Had to motor
to make progress. Never again.
Now the first thing I do is consult the tide tables. Then look as the wind forecast
for the ideal time in tide currents, finally I look at what is convenient for the crew. My passages are a whole lot faster, even if we do leave a 0400.
