Hello from Minnesota

Hi there. We are recently married mid-lifers with long-term cruising goals. Currently landlocked and boatless in Minnesota while we finish raising our blended family.

Steffan has been sailing for 8 years, up to ASA Advanced Coastal, but never owned anything bigger than a 15ft Mutineer. Our most recent trip was getting Kelly certified to ASA Bareboat in the BVI this spring.

Short term goal is acquiring something older in the mid 30ft range we can use for long weekends on Lake Superior to hone our skills. Hopefully supplemented with a charter here and there. With any luck, six or seven years from now we'll be looking for something bigger, nicer and more capable for adventures further afield once the kids are grown.

Our jobs are mostly location independent and we both already work out of a cramped home office, so we are practicing the close quarters already . Cruising topics we are most interested in are buying our first boat, supporting ourselves, healthy eating, and keeping a cat onboard.

Hello from Minnesota

Hello Stefan, Kelly and blended kids. Lots of Minnesota or former MN sailors on the forum. My wife, two kids and I lived in Mendota Heights outside of St. Paul for 10 years mid 70s to mid 80s.

We sailed a trailerable 16' Sunbird all over the in town lakes, White Bear, Minnetonka, Lake Pepin, Vermilion and some of Superior. We learned a lot and had great fun. Many kid sized adventures and some big ones too.

Now we live in Southern California and cruise our Tayana 42. Lived aboard for 3 years in various places at anchor and in slips. Now we split our week between the house and the boat. Year round sailing is so nice.

Re: Hello from Minnesota

Hello from a fellow Minnesotan! Sounds like you have the plan pretty well mapped out. Having a remote-based job is huge, but in my mind, remote-based AND project-based work is really the rub if you can swing it.. Something that wraps up from time to time and you can just cruise without a schedule. Then, when you get to a good spot, stay for a while, work, and then cast off again..

That said, for better or worse, it's amazing how ubiquitous the internet is these days. There are islands in the bahamas for instance that are almost uninhabited with only a cell tower to remind you civilization still exists somewhere

But everyone does it differently and I'm sure you wont have any trouble finding the balance that works for you guys.

Good luck!
