Hello from Georgia

Hello,
I have been lurking here for a little while. Bought my first sailboat a 1979 Catalina 30 about 6 months ago. I bought her to live on which is illegal in Georgia, then moved into a cabin at my marina.

So far I am self taught, so I have a lot of questions still. My first experience with the boat was moving it down the ICW from Savannah to the Shellman Bluff area, about a 10 - 12 hour trip. I encountered weather so bad in Sapelo Sound it overcame my motor and pushed me off course, after going with the current and wind & waves then sharply turned into the weather I would make some progress... 3 loops and and an hour later I made it out of the sound into the little river where I live today. I made it down the ICW through some shallows, but within sight of the marina ran aground! Luckily the marina owner is very nice and her grandson pulled me off the bar. it was quite the trip. Before that day I had only piloted a 19' Center Console boat, and had never set foot on a sailboat except when the owner test drove it before I bought it.

I'm in Georgia as well and welcome to the forum. I didn't know you couldn't live aboard in Georgia. I know a lot of people do it at the marinas on lake lanier? Glad you made it safe and enjoy the boat!

that georgia live aboard restriction seems a bit severe to me. i usually stay on my boat many long weekends and nice days .. this can add up to more than 30 days a year. i hear they can fine you 10,000 for that. amazing nonsense.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here and I think you've got a great boat. I do recommend a basic sailing course so you can get used to using the sails to your advantage.
You've already got one adventure behind you and I'm certain you'll be experiencing many more.
kind regards,
