Hello from Coastal North Carolina !

New to the forums here and figured I'd introduce myself before I start pestering you all with questions. We run a 1988 38' Freedom "Snail's Pace" from Oriental on the Neuse River in NC. For reference, "we" is generally the family of myself, my mom, and my dad, though the other two don't really get around the internet much without my guidance.

I'm 22 and about to graduate from NC State. I come to you guys because, as a graduation present, dad and I (with a couple of crew) are going to take our first major trip on the boat, either to Bermuda or the Bahamas, and I'm looking for advice. I'll start a new thread elsewhere for that, though. For now, here's the boat.

My name is Thomas... See you all on the boards!

Which sub-forum would be the most appropriate for posting a "Should I sail to Bermuda or the Bahamas" topic? I searched for one that might be around already, but I didn't see a thread directly comparing the two...

I would think Atlantic/Caribbean... topic "Best Choice of destination for this time of year, NC to Bermuda or Bahamas" and invite pro's and con's for both...
Personally I'd pick Bermuda but then it depends on Ocean experience and if you feel up to 7 days or more at sea each way... dunno what you've done before.
Or you could do a triangle... how much time have you got..

Hey Thomas, welcome to the Forum. We are on the Neuse too, and Keep our boat up in New Bern.

If you want adventure, Bermuda all the way. Or if you have the time, Boatman has a great idea with the triangle run.

Bermuda for the sailing challenge, Bahamas for the many destinations, sights, and experiences.

A lot depends on what you want to do choosing between Bermuda and the Bahamas. Bermuda is about 600 miles from Beaufort Inlet and the Northern Bahamas a little less than 500 if you go straight off shore.

With the Bahamas you have the option of using some or all of the ICW so you don't have to have a weather window to accommodate the entire distance in one bite.

As a destination, the Bahamas offer greater diversity with islands stretching over 300 miles from the northern Abacos to the southern outer islands. Ranging from big cities like Nassau to remote uninhabited cays.

Sailing from Oriental

Hi, Thomas.

I, too, sail from Oriental, but my small (23'4") StoneHorse usually doesn't sail beyond the Pamlico Sound.
