Hello from Abaco, Bahamas

Greeting to all from Abaco, Bahamas, my home for the past 15 years. I have been sailing on and off for the past 40 years, used to captain a charter yacht in St Lucia, have run charter bases in The Bahamas and sailed my own boat on the "Atlantic Circuit" from UK to West Indies with my young family. Lots of miles and lots of stories !! Nowadays I deliver boats around, anyone needing advice on boating in The Abacos or help moving their boats, just drop me a line. I am here to help. Good sailing.

Re: Hello from Abaco, Bahamas

Hi Ainsley ... that is really nice of you. In fact we would like to learn more about that part of the world as we are headed that way late november.

One question about the Bahamas ... we don't know wind and current there ... our son arrives in Nassau mid Dec and we need to fetch him at the airport having sailed up from the BVI's. We would love to do the southern part of the islands as we believe it is beautiful.

Dilemma is that our other son is sailing the BVI's with us until mid Nov so we would literally have to sail past the south to return south (if you know what I mean).

Is this a mission in the Bahamas (cruising up and down) or is it reasonable considering 'wind and tide' at that time of year?

Its "Up South" and "Down North" to the Long Islanders.

Re: Hello from Abaco, Bahamas

Hi Impi Are you planning to sail up from the BVI non stop to Nassau ? Last time I did that trip on a 46ft Lepoard cat it took 5 days...you could then cruise down through the islands, i would recommend checking out The Exumas in the southern Bahamas. lots of cays to explore and very beautiful. In the winter winds usually E to NE , there is also a NW flowing current of about .5 knot, the tidal ranges are small around 3.5 ft, so nothing to difficult...dont forget to check out the Abaoc's..great sailing here and non of the boat traffic you find in the BVI

Re: Hello from Abaco, Bahamas

ainsley, we spent last summer in the abacos and will be coming back soon. just a terrific little cruising ground and suitable for us old folks because of the easy sailing in the sea of abaco and the short hop from florida. a combination of deserted beaches and islands, quaint colonial villages and the big city (marsh harbor, about as big of a big city i ever want to be in).

there are a couple of abaco websites that i keep up with just to stay in touch with island life there like abacoforum.com, abaconian.com
