Hello from a new sailor

Hey everyone, I just joined yesterday and just started sailing on a 20 something foot boat in a weekend class. I'm 22 and just graduated from college and I am working at a distillery. I'm currently accepting any tips or advice for a beginner. Also if anyone has a sunfish let me know I am looking to buy one as it is more in my recent college graduate budget. Thanks fellas and lady fellas.

Re: Hello from a new sailor

Notice how I added bourbon? Wishful thinking? You could end up with a lot of friends here!

Re: Hello from a new sailor

Crazyoldboatguy, yes it is a contract distillery but we do make bourbon and whiskey. Right now working on a 100% rye whiskey. Thanks for the welcome.

Howdy!

Since you want a low cost boat, and are considering a Sunfish, I recommend a Laser instead.

More performance oriented and better opportunities for some racing (if you like competition) if you desire. About the same size and cartoppable.

Good luck!

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here and my new favorite flavored bourbon is honey. I really, really, really like it.
If you don't mind spening the extra dollars then a Laser is more performance and ok. I prefer the Sunfish for ease of rigging and maintenance and initial cost. You can usually find one for about $400. Used parts are much easier to find on a Sunfish and sails are easily purchased for $100 if you need one. All in all you can't go wrong with a boat that's been around since 1955 and 20 years ago had sold more than 250,000.
Sunfish is a good choice for a first boat and they are easily found on craigslist. Our club has 14 of them.

Finally! A newbie with sense enough to start learning to sail on a Sunfish. Young man, I predict a good outcome for you...

Oh man... I'm still feelin' the humility for scoffing the bourbons with a touch of honey... I've made myself a pact to be more open and tolerant of the variety of distilled beverages available in the world today...
