Hello everyone!

Hey all! I'm a very very new sailor, I don't have a lot of experience (not from lack of trying!) but am so in love with it that I went out and bought a boat anyways! I'm not sure what direction I am heading with this, hopefully living aboard in a year or two (not sure if this boat will be big enough) but im sure it will be a great adventure.

Bought my 1st boat pretty much on impulse as well.. it was occupational therapy and by the time the cast and wires came off and outa my leg I was hooked.. never looked back,,

Congratulations on the new boat. Even if you already own a boat it is always good to do a course or two if you haven't had one yet.

Hi, Trostan,

On CF, is is frequent for some posters to recommend lessons. I'm somewhere in the middle on this, (I think). Lessons are great, and can be helpful. Also, so can teaching yourself also be. How you learn best is partly a function of personality and some of it may even be genetic. If you can learn by reading, well, over the long Canadian winter, you'll have plenty of time to read up on sailing and the Colregs. So, I'd say, assuming that learning by reading or watching videos works for you, then go teach yourself to sail right now before winter makes it necessary to put the boat up. Have some fun with your new toy, and don't run into anything.

Ann makes an excellent point. While lessons will give you the basics, they're given under relatively controlled circumstances, and you'll be paying more attention to your instructor than you do to the wind and water until, of course, you go out on your own. Think of it as "Driver's Ed" in a really big parking lot.
