I think whether or not living with your family for a while being 23 y.o is a bad thing and a burden on family may vary from individual. Whether it be dependent on if the individual is loved (I am) or if the individual plans to contribute (I do) .
I also believe whether or not the move would be a step backwards is variable between each individual based on what the individuals plan consists of.
(Mine consists of getting my credit right by paying bills and building capital to invest which I could not do at least as quickly while continuing to build a business.)

If my kid started on a path that didn't make him happy and he had a solid reset plan that put him on the path he wanted I would be happy host him for a do-over...

My dad had a simple rule in his house - "Two hots and a cot. Go to work or go to school otherwise you don't live here..."
