Hello and A Question re Atlantic Crossing

Hi all

My name is Chris Weeks living in Jersey Channel Islands and have been sailing for 20 years.

I have a question regarding a proposed trip to the Caribbean.
Coming from Jersey the boat is VAT exempt but I have heard tales of this status causing an issue with some authorities. Would the forum be kind enough to advise me what documentation would be required to be on board to prevent any hassle from officialdom. We could visit any of the Virgin Islands so there could be interest from US, French, Dutch and UK authorities.

The plan is to head out to the Canary Islands I August and leave for the Caribbean in December so maybe the Spanish authorities also need consideration.

The boat will be returning to Jersey after a few months.

spain france and portugal are the only countries you need worry about,and since the vessel is reg in the channel islands,and you resident,you are not eligable for vat ,unless you plan on selling the vessel in an eu country. all the carib islands have vat exempt status i belive.

There have been a lot of threads in the past about this subject. If you use the google search you can find them. Press the SEARCH tab, then select the second search box. Type VAT TAX EXEMPT CARIBBEAN. Good Luck

Welcome Chris to the best sailing forum anywhere. As previously suggested, check out all the websites but more importantly, take every scrap of paper you ever had regarding the boat, purchase agreement, mooring contract, maintenance work, fuel bills, anything you can find; bureaucrats everywhere love paper, it’s their religion, their only purpose in life, so take it all with you and wherever you go, you will make them happy campers and more importantly, keep them from ruining your cruising pleasure…James
