Hello

My name is Philip King. I am 33 years old and live on the coast of the Caribbean Sea here in Belize. I am new to sailing and don't own a boat.

I have always been interested in sailing around the world and joining this forum is the first step in meeting this goal. I am in no particular hurry to do it but just want to start learning about all this.

So I'd appreciate if you have any advice on learning how to sail, how to pick a good boat(not too expensive) et cetera.

Thanks,

Philip

Welcome aboard.

If you have a local beer can racing fleet ..ask around for anyone in need of a green horn...you will probably get a ride somewhere along the line if your persistent and show some commitment.

Yes, welcome aboard Philip. There are many threads on this site concerning finding a good boat at a good price, including boats in the Caribbean. As to learning to sail, Stillraining makes a good suggestion. Further, since there are often cruising boats that stop in Belize, you may wish to make the acquaintance of some cruisers and offer some free labour (or assistance in shopping/transportation onshore) in exchange for a daysail or two. Apart from time on the water, their experiences/advice should prove beneficial in pursuing your dream.

If you've never sailed, then I echo the above suggestion to either get into some weekend sailing as a greenhorn on someone's small crew, or find a local sailing club with access to some daysailing boats to cut your teeth on.

First thing is make sure you don't get seasick. Then, it's just a learning curve. A really LONG learning curve, but still most of what you learn is simple. There's just a lot to learn.
