Doug and Alicia here. We have no sailing experience what so ever. We are starting out at ground zero, learning everything as we go. Coming from a landlocked state, we have a long way to go. Wish us luck on our journey. We have been finding many have already done what we are starting out to do so this is very encouraging.

Hi Doug and Alicia! There are a couple of beginner's sailing books published by ASA, worth purchasing and studying. They are available at most book sellers and ASA's website. In sailing, as in flying, hands-on experience is a must. Once you've learned the basics, you'll need to work on your seamanship skills; a life-long endeavor. Crewing is one way to do it; check your local marinas for availability. Plenty of Old Salts on CF to advise you on how to sail to the moon; be selective in what you read. Hello and welcome Doug and Alicia. I am new here too. One thing I did years ago to gain experience while I was learning was to buy a small monohull sloop and sailed it on an inland lake.

Wish I had a forum like this back then.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
I decided to make the islands my permanent home many years ago. I'd pick an island group that is more friendly to sailors than Hawaii if I were to start again.
