Hi,
I am new to the forum. Have been captaining a sportfishing boat for the last couple of years, but am now getting back into sailing seeing as how I want to do some cruising. I am no stranger to sailing or crossings, but I am looking for people who have knowledge about marinas and destinations in the western carribean. If u you have any recommendations let me know.

Last fall I took my sailboat from Toronto Canada to Rio Dulce Guatemala. Some of my favourite places on the trip were Isla Mujeres Mexico, Cay Caulker Belize and Havana Cuba.

Isla Mujeres was my overall favorite. Its safe, the people are friendly and lots of restaurants and bars. You can anchor out but there are plenty of northerners to make it uncomfortable. If you are lucky you might get in one the marinas in the lake south of harbor where its only $300 per month but the demand is high. The lake itself is fairly protected for anchoring.

Cay Caulker is a great party place and the anchoring is fairly protected.

And Cuba, well you probably won't go there being American but a lot do. It really a great place, Should be seen before they drop the embargo.

Up the Rio Dulce river in Guatemala is a great place to leave your boat for hurricance season but I found it rather boring. A great side trip though is Antigua (the town not the island) near Guatemala city. There you can learn Spanish very cheaply and they have good restaurants.
