Hailing from south Mississippi

Hello folks. New guy here. In south Mississippi, live outside Hattiesburg but have a camp near the coast. We boat a lot, but it's always been powerboats. Looking to get into sailing and teach my daughters how to. We watch the Hobie Cats races on our coast, as well as just watch any sailboats. Looking at a 26' Grampian and a 25' Macgregor, but can't decide! The Grampian has a motor, but no trailer (kinda need), and it needs paint. The Macgregor looks decent, has a trailer, but no motor! Decisions, decisions!

Welcome Aboard, bpitt,

If you guys just want to have fun and learn to sail, why not something smaller? easier to trailer? Then, if all of you take to it, get something a larger, with more accommodation, for overnighting. Your experiences with the smaller, less expensive boat will inform your later choices. This would be true of anything from Lasers to beach cats, depending on your preferences.

Between the two you mentioned I would go for the Grampian, because I am poorly impressed with the MacGregor quality of build, but I am also not informed about the Grampian, so my opinion here is worth very little, merely a prejudice.

All the local yacht clubs have boats that members can use. Most of the clubs have an out of town membership that is cheap. I'm a member at Ocean Springs
and they have a great sailing program.

This post is three years old. (Don't worry, many have done the same thing.)
