This is incorrect, you CANNOT enter Mexico with a weapon on board with the intention of declaring it. You MUST have permission before, you arrive, to bring a firearm into the country or you will go to jail. They RARELY give that permission.

That may be true about Mexico

but it's not necessarily the case in other countries as I discovered earlier in the thread. No prior permission is necessary unless you want to 'import' the weapon. And additionally, the big surprise to me is, you can declare weapons on visiting yachts that no matter how much permission you seek, you will never be permitted to import. E.g automatic and some semi automatic weapons.

Better to keep a pet echidna or maybe a pair and leave them on deck at night.

Sounds a lot like what I was saying about France and it's outremer departments and territories, doesn't it Atoll?

Even coming into the US with a handgun isn't simple. I brought two of them back with me from France when I moved back here in 1988. Both were .32 cal. target guns, specifically designed by Unique for Olympic Speed competitions.

Getting them out of France was a piece of cake (I went to the office of the Airport Police, told them what was in the carrying case, and they escorted me to the plane so that I could remit it to the Flight Commander, who returned it to me when we landed).

On arrival at Dulles Airport, I remitted the case to the nearest Customs Officer who made me wait for close to an hour before remanding me to the local FBI office for ID and finger printing. I was lucky. My fingerprints matched the ones I'd left with the CIA in a previous life, but it still took me over 6 months to get my strange looking little semi-autos back.

Things might have changed since then, but I wouldn't advise bringing guns into (or near) any country you plan to visit unless you're absolutely sure they'll greet them with open arms (sic). Most won't, and that's a fact.
