Gremlins

We Just began a cruise, heading for the Bahamas and have been plagued with Gremlins!! Our boat is just pristene and we have new interior and several items have been added for our comfort and ease. Besides the weather beating us to death, the microwave broke, our Mega Light doesn't work, the shower pump needs a new fuse holder and just as we were about to set our anchor in the Little Shark River, our motor gave a little tink and then quit!! We had to be towed 40 miles to Marathon and are now sitting at a Boat Yard waiting until they open after a 4 day weekend for the Thanksgiving holiday. We will get things fixed and be on our way, but this is NOT how we planned to start our trip. Hopefully all the Gremlins will be gone after this and it will be smooth sailing after this. We don't know how many more trips we will be able to do now that we are in our 60's. But we love sailing and have a Colgate 26 at home to enjoy on the weekends. But for now, say a little prayer for us that we have success in getting our motor fixed without it costing us an arm and a leg. I'm glad I joined the Cruiser's Forum. How is everyone else doing?

Sorry your haveing so much trouble on your trip ! All the stuff besides the engine, could be fixer at anchor, but the Big Ting, and the stopped running , is nothing to mess with! We have been so lucky. over they years, to not to have had motor trouble of this sort! Now the other problems are all things we have had to deal with ! I think it's some kind of rule or something, that ya just can't have a trip when ya just have to do maintainece, and not have to fix something in order to be semi comfortable!! LOL But it's still better then dirt living !! We hope the rest of the trip comes out good for ya !!

Consider doing a few shakedown cruises before you take the big leap. All boats that have had work done to them have their bugs that need to be worked out and quite often they don't appear until you have put the boat to some use.

Marine mechanics have been known to be very expensive, but we have a fair amount of experience and knowledge on this Forum.

If you could describe (as fully as possible - engine type, history, etc.) the problem with your engine we may be able to assist.

Hope very much that the engine problems are not serious. The rest of the teething troubles are the norm on a first long voyage.

PS Remember if you get Gremlins wet they multiply. Don't leave any food out after midnight either .

Gremlins are hard to keep away on a boat because they multiply with water
