Hello all!! I am and old "new boater". What I mean is that I am 48 years old and a side from my Searay 28 that I have had for 1 year (to boot around lake Ontario).
My (and my wife's) intentions are to take every
marine,
navigation, and captain's course in the next 18 months in order to gain valuable experience and knowledge in preparation for our ultimate goal....a 20 month great loop starting from Toronto
Ontario and weaving through the
great lakes to the
Tenn-Tom
route and then going to the
Miami area. from there we would like to move west to
Bimini and through the
Bahamas, then to
Cuba and eventually to
Mexico and the
Yucatan Peninsula in order to check out the Mayan ruins. From there; We would boogie across the
Gulf of Mexico to the Keys, up to
Miami again and finally through the
ICW, Dismal Swamp,
New York and St. Lawrence
Canal and finally back home to
Lake Ontario.
The vessel we would like to use for this trip is from an N37
Grand Banks trawler(7 knots top speed) or equivalent in respect to space and
safety. Our Ideal vessel is one that has about the same size living space as an N37 GB
trawler but can do 14 - 28 knots at full tilt and have a
draft of 48" or less and dual screws.
Aside from that (which we have over 18 months to get) my biggest fear is the Tenn-Tom
route and the "wing damns". I fear running aground. and from what I have read; the wing damns can change from week to week. I have basically been told to simply stay in the center of the river (and between the day markers...if they are even there) and we should be OK.
Any
advice would be awesome.
