Ft. Carroll was obsolete by the time of the Civil War. There was a connection, though: Robert E. Lee was in charge of construction at some point.

I believe there was a dock on the north side of the island some years ago. Don't know if it's still there but you should be able to see it if it is from the Key Bridge.

Off the east side of the bridge on the Sparrows Point side is a stars and stripes marker bouy. That is where the ship with Sir Francis Scott Key was anchored during the battle and were he saw the flag still flying over the fort in the morning that gave him the inspiration to write the Star Spangled Banner. I'm just full of useless little tidbits of info.
