Greetings from the Great Lakes

Hello!

I've been perusing the forums here for a couple of days and decided to register. I have a 31 foot cutter that I sail on Lake Huron. I do all the work on Jaeger myself and am saving up retirement funds with the thought of sailing down the Hudson river in the not-too-distant future. After that...who knows.

Jim

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Jim.
Sounds like a great plan to me.

hello fellow Great Lakes sailor. Bob and I live near Toronto and look forward to sailing Lake ON and Georgian Bay this summer.
Do you have favorite spots on Lake Huron?

Re: Greetings from the Great Lakes

Hello from another Great Lakes sailor Jim. We're up here on the big brother of the lake family: Lake Superior. We mostly sail the north shore (the Canadian shore) of Superior, but have also spent a fair bit of time in Georgian Bay and the North Channel.

If you're looking for wilderness cruising, with big water and few people, I'd encourage you to point your bow north.

Cathy,

I don't (yet) know about about Lake Ontario, but I did spend a couple of years at Bridgeview Marina in Sarnia, very nice place with great staff, etc, but the current on the river could put a boat in real jeopardy if the engine ever failed at the wrong time. My favorite place from Sarnia was a little beach on the Michigan shore about three miles up the coast. Crystal clear water and wonderful sandy shore. Great for just hanging out on a summer afternoon.

I also haven't yet made it across to Georgian Bay or the North Channel, but the North Channel is definitely on my list if I ever get the time. (Three week's annual vacation is quite limiting at five knots.) However, I can say that Harrisville and Port Austin on the Michigan sides are quite nice, pleasant small towns with good state-run docks. I draw five feet and Port Austin had six when I was there. I stayed a few days in Harbor Beach but barely made it in.

I'd love to hear about your adventures when you get there.

Regards,

Jim

Hat's off to you Mike. That water is COLD at the best of times!

It is indeed Jim. But on the positive side, it inspires you to keep well harnessed in when things kick up. As they say up here, the lifejacks don't really help much. They just prolong the agony, and help the CG to find the body

Hmmm, I guess I'm not selling Superior very well. It really is a wonderful cruising ground.
