Greetings from South Bruny Island, Tasmania

Hello all. Just a quick intro for myself & my wife Claire ("the admiral") to all in the cruising community. We are based here on South Bruny Island Tasmania amongst some beautiful sailing grounds, albeit sometimes a bit cold! I am travelling to the BVI's next week to survey / sea trial a yacht there we have contracted to purchase. Happy to hear from any in the community who have some experience of the location! cheers, Colin

Welcome aboard CE, I expect you will find the BVI's a little warmer than South Bruny! I have the Cruising Southern Tasmania Guide on the bedside table right now. I hope all goes well with your survey and sea trials.

G'Day Colin and another welcome to CF!

Just wondering where on the island you are located? Lots of great anchorages on the channel side, but not so many spots for permanent moorings!

Good luck with the purchase and (if applicable) the return voyage.

Cheers,

Jim

G'day! Thanks for your response. The boat is in dry storage in Nanny Cay Marina. The boat in question is a Hunter Passage 42. The pics we have so far show she is in need of some TLC, thats OK providing there are no major issues. We are centre cockpit sailors, we have a Compass Innovator 33 (aussie made, sadly no more) here on South Bruny. A great boat.
Couple of questions if I may?
1. Where do you store your Beneteau when not in town? The rates quoted on the marina website are a lot higher than we are accustomed to & certainly a lot higher than Europe!
2. The environment seems to be a bit harsh on boats there? Is this the case?
cheers Col

Hello Jim.

Our boat is tied off inside the Alonnah pontoon which is part of the old floating bridge across the Derwent River before a new bridge was built in the 1960's. We can just manage to get inside to the finger piers that the Bruny Island Boat club built (7 of!) a couple of years ago. We have only a 5 foot draft, (aussie built centre cockpit Compass Innovator 33, sadly no longer in business) and are restricted to 2 hours either side of high tide to enter / exit from behind the pontoon, but she sits "in a hole" outside of our transit hours snug against the finger pier.
The BVI adventure is the beginning of a 1-2 year oddessy to Europe & the west coast Scotland which we love. Not sure if we have the right boat here for the job but if you don't look you will never know heh!
cheers Col.
