Greetings from somewhere on Lake Huron!

I'm Dave. I'm new here. I'm a power boater by nature, but I find that I have more in common with those of you who favor wind power and long journeys. I spent a lot of my childhood in boats, and I've spent the last seven years as a licensed deck officer aboard Great Lakes cargo ships.

Up to this point, the only boat I've actually owned is a 12 foot kayak. Hopefully that is going to change shortly. I've got my eye on a 32 foot Wellcraft St Tropez, and I plan to seal the deal In less than two weeks! I don't remember the last time I was this excited about something.

In the mean time, I look forward to getting to know you all

Re: Greetings from somewhere on Lake Huron!

I was born in Michigan, and I have lived in both upper and lower peninsulas. Sailing on the Great Lakes is much more challenging than sailing on the ocean. The storms I saw as a kid growing up in Frankfort, Michigan impressed me with the power of the weather on those lakes.

Yeah, it can get pretty hairy in a really short amount of time up here. I once saw the west end of lake erie go from 2-4' to 10-12' in about half an hour. It was pretty impressive.

Oh, another Michigander ! Welcome aboard !~ Haha, the lakes can build fast for sure. I was out with my grandfather in a little 12' aluminum whitefishing one summer near the channel under the mackinaw bridge, nearly dead calm. 25 minutes later we were in 5 footers in that little boat.. that was a bit exciting. We'd have come in when the wind picked up, but they started biting really good, and you just don't go in when the fish are biting like that... LOL!~
