Greeting, Sailors!

My name is Josh (aka: sharpcoder). I am a Software Engineer in my early 20s with a yearning for the liveaboard lifestyle. Although I've never even owned a boat before, I think my lax personality would fit perfectly. Whenever I think of a white picket fence, 2.5 kids, and a cookie-cutter home - I just feel a little depressed at how mundane the road ahead seems. I hope to change course, though!

Specifically, I came here looking for a place to ask questions. I'm in the research phase of what I hope to be a glorious adventure. Although I've read many sites about what's in store, I don't think anything can fully prepare me for the journey. But hopefully I can get some initial questions answered here

Cheers!

Josh, Welcome to the community. Where would you likely plan to begin your "liveaboard lifestyle". There's quite a variety in expectations and challenges at different locations.

I currently live in Washington and, long story short, I have a job that lets me "remotely work" for 3 days a week (I'm working to make it more ). For those remaining 2 days, my office is located in Everett, WA. So I was thinking the Everett Marina would be a nice place to begin my journey. I've done some research and they appear to be a good marina, close to work, and the location is close enough to other amenities that I enjoy (like a small airfield).

Re: Greeting, Sailors!

Sharpcoder, We hear great things about living aboard and cruising in the Puget Sound area. We just returned from a quick survey of marine facilities and harbors between Crescent City and SanFrancisco where we found very little available on that harsh rocky coast.

Welcome aboard, Josh!

You will find that if you offer to help at haulouts, you will be able to get "rides" on other folks boats. So whoever you meet in the bar after the races is a potential friend alongside whom you can learn lots.

Read books, fill your head with the stuff that's make it possible to maximize your dream.

Have fun. Fun is good. :-)

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here. I would think the PNW is pretty much ideal for sailing except the months in late fall, winter and spring. Just kidding. There is good weather occasionally in some of those months too.
kind regards,
