Since there's no motor in the boat, I think a good engine bay cleaning and painting is the best place to start.
Yes, get that engine room all cleaned up and ready so your new engine or motor will have a great place to live. It'll be much happier.

kind regards,

Re: Greenhorn

I haven't installed the new motor yet because of winter. Once it warms up a bit and the snow melts I can install it. We are very excited for spring to come.

Re: Greenhorn

Welcome!!! You might be interested in a safe boating course through either the U.S. Power Squadron (They do sail too) or the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. You'll learn the rules of the road and other basics and get a boating certificate which is required in Canada now if you end up on that side of the lake.

The snow will melt and it will get warmer soon!

Re: Greenhorn

I will post all updates as they get completed.. I'd like to add that I ordered and received a very nice guide. It's called dozier's waterway guide for the Chesapeake bay 2014. I've only browsed through it so far but what I see I really like. It's a little pricey but it may be worth it. Ill look through it more in depth and report more on it later.

Re: Greenhorn

UPDATE: finally got to take a good look at the waterway guide. This guide is just what I need. Rest assured that it will be on my boat when it sails and I do recommend this to other sailors. At first You may think it's a little pricey but it's not, it is chock full of useful info. Now We just need to get out there and use it.

Re: Greenhorn

Welcome aboard and don't worry. I bought a boat before I knew how to sail also. Three years on and I've learned a ton and my wife and I love it more and more every season.
