G'Day From South Australia

We are recent new members the Cruisers Forum and note that there are a number of Aussies on the list of members and a number who visit Australia from overseas. Few unfortunately ever make it to the amazing cruising grounds of South Australia. Anyone contemplating heading this way please let us know, we would love to show you around these wonderful cruising waters.

Re: G'Day From South Australia

Hello kiwieclipse, great to see another SA cruiser here. I am planning to post some Kangaroo Island pix when we get down there in Spring in an attempt to lure some of the Tassie regulars a bit further West. I have also been following the postings of a SA sea kayaker who finds lovely destinations and posts terrific photos.

The Joseph Banks group of Islands is calling us loud and clear, plan to visit those around Christmas time.

Do you have any recommendations? Matt

Re: G'Day From South Australia

G'day from Sydney.

Early this year was sailing Perth to Melbourne and really enjoyed the whole coastline and islands, plenty of Bluefin Tuna, Squid, Snapper, Abalone, Scallops and some Lobster. Saw no other cruisers for six weeks and only one or two local yachts. Some very friendly yacht clubs along the way.

Spent a few days in Coffin Bay trying to put a dent in the Scallop population.

Hope to do it all again someday on my own boat circumnavigating Australia.

Cheers.

I don't want to rain on your show but I often listen to the SA weather reports since they are on before the NT reports and it sounds like a very windy place for much of the year?

Yo, I can vouch they are tough down there. The summer seabreeze usually builds to 20-25 knots and more but nothing stops those dinghy racers. Here in NZ, it tops out at 15 knots and up in Darwin I recall you fellas head to the bar when the merest zephyr kicks in. You've gotta admire them, braving it way down there on the southern ocean

Welcome to CF KiwiEclipse! We are also South Aussies, born and bred. We cut our cruising teeth around the gulf and Kangaroo Island before heading east in late 2011. Its an amazing and unique place. All this talk is making me homesick... sniff! ;-) Check out our (early) blog for a few tales of our time around SA.

Hi Stray Cat

Were you in Port Fairy in 2009 and we came aboard from "Tibia" a Swanson 38? We enjoyed your home brew!

Oooohhhh yeahh.... Very nice winds for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and pushing around sluggish old Swansons.

And there's very little fetch in the Gulf St Vincent so the waves are rarely a problem though it gets choppy.

I love it, I get all confused about which sailing device to use some days. Just stand on the beach and panic.... Windsurfer... Swanson... Windsurfer... Swanson....

(must learn to kitesurf one day.)

Matt
