Future Cruiser

Hi everyone. I am new to Cruisers Forum and very excited to be here. My husband and I plan to be cruising full time by the spring of 2014. We currently live in the USA, Colorado and sail on Lake Dillon, which has very unpredictable winds and weather! (snow in July for example) We are beginning our research for our cruising sailboat. We know a few things so far. We want it to be between 42 and 45 feet. We want it to have less than a 6 foot draft but still be sturdy enough for water sailing">blue water sailing as we eventually want to go beyond the Caribbean. At one time we thought we wanted a center cockpit with an aft master cabin, but we have heard that the aft cockpit with a bow master cabin is better. We have lotts of questions and lotts of ambition as we prepare for departure. I know 2014 seems far away, but time goes pretty fast and there is a lot to do to get ready!! I would welcome any input and any friends!!

Re: Future Cruiser

It takes at least a couple of years for most people to get their boat ready for a major sailiing voyage. Planning to go in 2014 should give you plenty of time to make it happen.

You will find lots of resources here on Cruisersforum to sort it all out.

Hello, my wife and I live in Maine and are also in the process of becoming cruisers. We had been researching boats for 2 years and cruising on Adventure Sailing trips with Modern Sailing (3 trips) in the past 2 years. I would not decide on center cockpit or aft cockpit or where you want the master stateroom until you have spent at least a week sailing and living with both. After 1 week in a v-berth on a 47 we decided that the bow was not the best place for our stateroom. We then spent a week in the aft cabin and liked it much better. We now have a Hylas 56 on order to be delivered this November. We decided on the Hylas because we could make a lot of design decisions that would effect life onboard, and most of the other brands only let you change items like colors and fabric. Good Luck with everything

Re: Future Cruiser

Thanks for the advice!! We definately hope to try them each out. We were told that the advantage to the bow was air flow. We hope to spend most of our time anchored, which would mean no air conditioning except for the breeze!! We want all the information we can gather and all the experience we can get.
