Former circumnavigator would like to participate in discussions and help any newcomer

I'm landlocked in Steamboat Springs, a beautiful place to live, but far from the sea. I have a book coming out soon, VOICES ON THE WIND, about the people I met during a circumnavigation via Panama and Cape of Good Hope in the late 80's. In finishing that project I relived many of those fun expereinces, and thought that I could assist other people with their dream. No teacher speaks as forcefully as experience we all need to make our own mistakes, but that said, I would be happy to get on board and offer whatever advice I could.

Aloha and Welcome aboard!
I'll look forward to reading your book. I like the Allied Luders 33. I sailed on old wooden Luders 44 yawls back in the 70s. Nice design.
Kind regards,
JohnL

Dear Lady C..I dont know if this will reach you, as I'm still trying to circumnavigate this website. Thank you so much for your offer.
I also want to go to Panama.... via Isla Mujeres in 18 months. I'm looking at a Downeast 38 and wonder if you have any thoughts on how dry the cockpit is....the cockpit is flush with a small foot well....some folks have mounted a chair behind the wheel...not so comfortable when the boat heels, I would imagine. Also, I'm wondering what you think about keeping passengers dry back there with water having no place to go but out the stern over the cockpit deck....exactly where we all will be sitting....thanks.

Welcome Lady C:

I was in the So Pac int he late 80's. Only got as far as Aussie on my trip. What was the name of your boat? Welcome aboard. It will be great to hear your stories.

Really looking forward to hearing what you, and everyone, here has to say. I'm here to get advice; maybe years from now I'll be able to give it, too.

Autographed copy of VOICES ON THE WIND

I'd be happy to do that. Books should be available form Seaworthy any day now, although it's not yet posted on their website. In about two weeks, I'll have copies in my possession. So please hold that thought, and I'll post additional info as it becomes available. Thanks.

Welcome!

I am looking forward to reading your posts and learning more about your book! It would be terrific to learn your views on boat choices, size, fitting out etc.

Looking forward to all.

best

John
ps - are you a ham? CO would be a pretty decent location to transmit from and you could keep in touch with Atlantic and Pac cruise nets, I would think.

I don't think my reply reached you due to my inadequacies maneuvering this site. I'm learning.
Assuming your'e considering an older Downeaster, the cockpit may be a problem, especially if it doesn't give you enough room to brace yourslf and sit comfortably and steer. A problem with some 70's vintage DownEasters was their oversized windows. I met a couple in Capetown who blew out their windows in a storm and luckily had plywood covers ready, but they still had a lot of damage below.

Welcome and i hope your book is a great success.... I am sure that you will be able to help many in the forum, to realise their sailing dreams, with pertinent information from one who had done it and has the t-shirt.

Best Regards

Alan
