Just saying hi. I'm from NZ. Currently own a John Welsford Houdini and a Hartley TS16, so not going too far in those, but I plan to buy an H28 when I can, maybe next year all being well. I'm looking at the GRP version, preferably a Compass, not the original Herreshoffs. I love wooden boats but will get GRP for practicality and cost.

I intend to strip it and renovate it before moving aboard eventually and doing some long-distance cruising. I'm working on a very rough timeframe of 5 years. I plan to have the boat moved to my property so I can renovate at my leisure.

I have a 2 year old and 4 year old alternate weeks so that will be interesting. Luckily they both show an interest in boats.

Would be keen to meet / talk to anyone who's been a long way in an H28.

Hi CB and welcome to the forum,

My opinion, boating with your kids is a great thing. I can't think of any we ever took out on our boat that didn't enjoy it. We lived on board with our daughter for a couple of years and boated with her all her life. Now she's married to a boater (unfortunately a power boater but I'm working on that) and they spend most of their vacations on or around the water. Now have a two year old granddaughter that is almost an amphibian.

Sorry I can't help you with the H28 but bet you a NZ$ that someone shows up pretty soon that knows them well.

Thanks skipmac, at that age it's great as they're pretty game for anything and will literally sleep anywhere! My biggest concern about the liveaboard lifestyle (on an H28) is the lack of space as the kids grow up. I even thought of buying a cat until I saw the price of mooring over here!
