Family Planning to Move Aboard

Hi All,

We've been lurking on the boards for a while but thought it is a good time to join.

We currently sail a Freedom 32 on Lake Michigan. We're a family of four with two kids age 11 and 9.

We are looking for a new boat, though, because we are taking a 1+ year family sabbatical starting this summer. We'll be cruising our new boat from Lake Michigan to the FL Keys and then Bahamas and who knows where. So, you'll probably see some questions about different boat models on our short list.

Ok, since you were about to ask, our current short list is: Slocum 43, Lafitte 44, Fuji 40, Vagabond 42, and Passport 42. We're looking for steady and safe (and will probably get slow in the package).

Cheers,
--Kevin and Jen

Hello Kevin,

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you have a good list of fine boats you are looking at. You do gain some benefits from giving up a little speed, after all is going fast isn't why we choose the cruising life?

Hope you all the best in your search and have fun on your year long adventure!

Peter

Aloha and welcome aboard!
I don't know any of those boats personally but have looked at them too and you've got a great short list. Don't know which one I'd choose.
I would go with the smallest that will fit your needs.
Good luck in your search.
kind regards,

Welcome to CF, taylorsailors. As your children are nearing the teen years, any thought of a catamaran for berths they can call their own? Also, the shallow draft will allow more pristine anchorages in the area you plan to travel, and do not roll as much on the hook.

Welcome taylorsailors to the CF!

I am unknowledgeable about the boats you are interested in.

do you plan on staying at a marina or living on the hook?

Welcome aboard. Always good to see more Great Lakes and Lake Michigan sailors here on CF.

I've been eyeing the Fuji 40 in Wisconsin for awhile now. She's out of reach for my budget, but wow, what great cabin for a family of 4!

Welcome to the community. We raised our two children, son and daughter, aboard our 41' ketch and with great success. I'm sure you can do well. With your cruising plans, we will likely be crossing wakes. 'see you on the water!

I will begrudgingly 2nd the cat suggestion. A cat can never come close to the beauty of our double ender but I know that my wife and kids gaze longingly at the spacious cabins of a cat

I don't understand the statement shallower draft rolls less. I would think it would be the opposite?

Unless the shallower draft is offset by wider hull?

That was the idea. A 12' beam, leaded keel mono will react differently in a rolling anchorage than a 25' beam cat. Kind of a rolling vs rising scenario don't you think?

Draft is just one of the differences between a mono vs cat.

How about a 12' beam shallow draft power boat, it rolled like a hamster ball.

I think he was meaning with a shallower draft, one could maneuver the boat into more sheltered and shallower bays... and that would be less pitch and roll... thats what i thought anyway. A shallower draft wouldn't be as susceptible to minor waves.

Re: Family Planning to Move Aboard

I know this post is 2 years old.... But for the next people who read it... Notice that not a single person here commented on the boats the OP as asking about. She eventually bought a Brewer 12.8. Congrats!

Re: Family Planning to Move Aboard

Yes, we bought a Brewer 12.8, which (ours) was a cutter rigged, more modern version of the Whitby 42. It ended up being a great boat for our needs--roomy, plenty of sleeping space for a family of four, safe and solid but also sailed very well.

We used it in Florida, the Bahamas, and on the ICW between Florida and NC.
