Re: Clueless Sister-in-law Needs Help!

Many people have commented on how this forum is better than certain others because the moderators keep a friendly atmosphere and until now I would have agreed. Being called names by a moderator certainly raises doubts about that now.
We were just having a little light hearted fun eh. "jeez"

I am no longer a moderator (retired) and when I cross the line I get moderated just like everyone else.

No free lunch.

Sorry if I offended. I was just having a bit of light hearted fun...

I'm sure you'd recognize this then...

Be Courteous!
We aim to ensure that the forum is an enjoyable place.... Excessive sarcasm, belligerence, insults....

We take the "be nice" rule VERY seriously! We do not tolerate ANY rudeness.

Maybe I neglected to be courteous with my remark but at least I didn't insult the lady. You on the other hand...

"Capt Wraun is a bonehead" is a personal attack.

"For the boneheads in the peanut gallery" is a generality.

If you connected the dots to yourself, what can I say...

And if he word "bonehead" damages your sensibilities I truly and sincerely apologize but you may want to HTFU...

I am hoping to buy some sailing gloves for my brothers-in-law and husband for Xmas. They all sail about once a year at a camp we visit each summer, so I don't want to hear that real men don't need gloves and all that - if you only sail once a year it gives you blisters. We live in Indiana, but the camp is on a glacier lake in Wisconsin.

Also, because they pretty much only sail in the summer, I don't need weather resistant gloves - gloves that cut off at the knuckles are probably fine.

I've done a little research of my own, but honestly am not sure where to start looking. What brands would you recommend? These boys like to be spoiled so I'd like to get them some nice, cool-looking (they are in their 20s and care about appearance ) gloves.

Can you help me out?

Let me know if you need any more info to make a suggestion, and thanks a bunch!

I don't get the "real men don't wear gloves" thing. I sometimes forget to put them on, and ABSOLUTELY know I have a better grip on a line and can pull both harder and more efficiently with gloves on. There are some differences between men and women but I don't see how this could possibly be one of them.

I like leather gloves at Tractor Supply and cut the fingers half off. Be sure to get the right size. Cost is $10 a pair.

A. I never accused you of launching a personal attack. I only pointed out that you were (and continue to be) in contravention of the "be nice" rule.

Otherwise, you are a pretty funny guy... in a mostly annoying sort of a way.

Nice gloves btw

TSC is one place I buy rope that if it were marked lines at a marine shop, would cost twice as much.

H-T- (letter between E and G) -U is an acronym that may have inadvertently drifted over from the anarchistic sailors' site.
The CF version would be something like Please pretend that I was only supporting you in taking this in a lighthearted manner, or PPTIWOSYITTIALM.

Again I am sorry guys but getting called out for "bonehead" on a sailing forum is like being called out by the grammar or spelling police.

Are regular sailors really offended by "bonehead"?

I personally will stick with George Carlin's list of seven...

Re: Clueless Sister-in-law Needs Help!

Well then think of it this way Ex. Yes were right that the lady was putting a fine effort into selecting a good gift for her friend but maybe sailing gloves isn't the best choice for a gift for a guy that doesn't sail much. I mean really, if he goes sailing once a year, maybe it's not that high on his list of fun activities. Maybe bowling shoes, diving fins or a skate board would be appreciated more?
Maybe bonehead isn't "much" of an insult but it isn't a very nice thing to say and in your own words "if you can't say anything nice then butt out". Besides it was the lump of coal in the stocking part that really hurt... jeez!
