Christian family of 4 Taking a Year off - Can we crew?

I am so thrilled to find this group!
We have recently decided to take a year off with our two awesome 12 year olds whom I homeschool and we are embarking on year of adventure!
I would love if we could crew or do missions work on a boat with like minded families. If anyone could point me in the direction for great resources or contacts I would be very grateful!
Hope you are all having an awesome day!

Smiles,
Shirley

Just pray. If the good Lord intends, it will happen.

Re: Christian family of 4 Taking a Year off - Can we crew?

Well Shirley...I guess the first question is...do you or your family have any sailing experience? It would be a snowballs chance in hell finding a boat willing to take on a family of 3 or 4. I have only seen one holy rolling boat while in Mexico and I do not know if they were doing any converting of the heathen local population.
That said, my wife does mission work with a group each year in Tijuana for a few weeks. Basically helping the desperately poor learn general hygiene and sewing skills. Maybe hook up with a church that can do that. Although I would imagine two 12 year olds might not find that too stimulating.

Hi Shirley,

I would doubt anyone will take a family as crew.
Most boat have berths for 6 or 8 so you would outnumber the owners

The captain has an onerous responsibility to protect the lives of you 2 children. Few would take that on.

I have never seen a whole family as crew.

Realistically there a very little chance.

Wasn't there some story a year or two ago about some holy roller family that bought a boat with no experience with the intention of going out and saving souls? But something bad happened? They either never left the dock or else didn't get very far? Anyone remember?

Shot dead in 2011. Is that the one?

Giving away bibles in ports they went to, they left a security convoy, and were attacked and shot dead by pirates. 4 people.

I don't know about the States but most sailors I know are fairly godless souls prone to swearing and the odd libation or four.. also as Mark says.. taking on 4 crew of which 2 are children is highly unlikely..
We have occasionally had folk come on here requesting us to transport them or goods to various parts of the Caribe but no one is willing to break the law and possibly lose their boats.. so they soon fade away.
You may have better luck contacting a land based organisation that does Christian relief work in the Caribe or SA.. I believe the Clintons have something going in Haiti.. also Peru who really need help right now.. maybe offer yourselves as relief workers.

Nah, I'm thinking of another family more recent than 2011. Maybe leaving from PNW in the states? Anyhell, nothing fails like prayer.

Re: Christian family of 4 Taking a Year off - Can we crew?

There is that Swedish Christian boat that I believe takes on like minded crews. Boat name Elida or thereabouts. Google it out and talk to them. I think they sail Nordic countries, Atlantic, possibly to the West Indies and back maybe. I have seen them as far out as Canary Islands.

The boat is well built, big, strong, comfortable and well managed.

Fair winds,
b.

Welcome aboard ShirleyY, don't let all these sailing heathens run you off. There are some resources out there for Christian families.

delancey, I think you might be thinking of these guys:

Missionary family continues construction of barge on Tillamook Bay | Tillamook County Pioneer

I never heard how that all ended up.....

Anyway, for ShirleyY -- you can try Googling "sailboat ministry" or "ship-based ministry" and see where that leads you. There are people out there doing it. Just a question of whether they have room and need for crew.
