Checking in from CT

New to the forum, not to sailing.

Wife and I are interested in making the transition from day/weekending to long term cruising.

The "plan" is to summer on the boat around New England/ upper east coast.
My winters are tied up on the ski slopes as a patroller, so we don't go south for the winter.

We know our Hunter 25 is not big enough for our plans, so we are looking around at other options.

Re: Checking in from CT

Hi John and welcome to the forum.

Have a friend with a Westsail 32 in Essex that spends at least two weekends a month cruising around LI Sound and is very happy with the size and room. Of course this is a large 32 footer and your preferences may vary. Any way you go it's a great area for cruising. Lots of places to go, things to see and good sailing.

Re: Checking in from CT

Thanks for the welcome.

I was fortunate to have a really cool high school teacher that taught a math/science class around sailing, our "final" was to sail from Noank to various places on the sound in the teachers 36' boat (I can't remember the brand, it was at least a few days ago).

We plan on hittng the dealers on the shore this summer to see what's around. Used is always good too, I do all my own work so maintenance isn't an issue.

Always nice to get first hand information though, if it works it works, I'm not to proud to copy it

Re: Checking in from CT

Hi John,

Since you already have a boat in CT I assume you won't suffer sticker shock when you start looking for a slip. My friend lives in Essex and after a long time on the waiting list got a mooring spot in the city operated field that is essentially free. He just pays for yearly hauling and maintenance of the mooring.

Slips at marinas in CT are, at least for a Florida boy, seriously expensive. Annual contracts are a bit better but transient rates kill me.
