Hi everyone, I'm up in Canada, on soon to be frozen Lake Ontario. I sail a Roberts Offshore 38, my 7th boat since 77. I just purchased her last Xmas, and spent most of this summer getting her in sailing shape. Didn't get much in this year, but next year should be great. Im looking forward to discussing all sorts of sailing/cruising related things with you good people.

Let me add my welcome to the Forum. Where on Lake Ontario are you located? I've sailed both LO and Georgian Bay quite extensively and found sailing on both lakes to be an exceptionally enjoyable experience as have many other members of this forum. Are you hauling before mid-October or waiting as long as possible before giving in to the cold weather? My latest time for sailing on Georgian Bay was Nov. 3..it snowed very hard the next day.

Yes welcome--makes the PNW seem downright subtropical! Is it always overcast on the Kenai penninsula? (On the other hand, perhaps that's why the Sockeye runs are so strong. . . .) Again, welcome to the forum.

Yes, unfortunatley our club has a scheduled haul out so we either come out then or pay to have it done elsewhere and then trailer back to the club. Oct 17 the mast comes down and she comes out on the 24th. Perhaps next year I will be living aboard year round.

I used to live aboard a Grampion 26 in Port Credit Harbour Marina, just west of Toronto ( long ago), and was actually out sailing on Jan 01 once. We got bundled up our duds and went out for a beautiful sail in the moonlight just after midnite. Then we crashed the Port Credit Yacht Clubs New Years ball by sailing into their guest dock. They were exstatic to see us and bought us a round. Then we shoved off (again under sail only) and headed back for an allnite party in the Marina. I think it was about 9am before I finally made it to my bunk. Winter sailing was quite normal, as long as the harbour didn't ice up and we could get out of the slip. I never had the greenhouse put up, so consequently I froze my tail off that winter. I could tell you tales about condensation that would scare you, and I burned out 7 baseboard heaters that winter. Grampions are single skin glass, no insulation in the hull at all.

I do most of my sailing in the west end of Lake Ontario, but have sailed in Georgian bay and as far east as the Bay of Quinte in my old Grampion.
