Captain Ron's Wanderer in Refit!

Hi all,
Just to put the rumors to rest...I bought the Wanderer last year and have been slowly refitting her with the help of Dockside Boat Repair in League City, Tx.
Got her for a song (and a large delayed maintenence bill...), and restoring her to her original condition (minus the wooden masts...). I expect the project to last until I can retire in a few years, but she should be sailing again Spring of 2014. Will set up a website to track progress soon.
Happy to be able to restore this Formosa beauty!
Mike

Re: Captain Ron's Wanderer in Refit!

I heard she was bought some time ago. It's good she'll get a good restoration. Looking forward to seeing how it goes.

Re: Captain Ron's Wanderer in Refit!

Here's some pre- and maybe a few post refit pics of what we've done so far.
Generally, had her hauled out for new bottom job, new through-hulls (glassed over 10 of the 19), rebuilt the rudder, new prop, yanked out the old tanks, plumbing, wiring, engine in rebuild now, due back in by the end of summer, sanitized bilge (it was really, really gross...), new bilge pumps, sounder & fairing block, black water tank, bilge cleaned, batt charger, dock lines, fenders, etc...

The next phase of the project is to redo the coachhouse and get the windows and portholes reinstalled (to stop the leaks!) in May.

Re: Captain Ron's Wanderer in Refit!

Think I read on a previous thread that three Formosas were used for different parts of the filming (and clearly some of the shots of the laughably oversized engine room/stern cabin were done in a studio). Any idea which parts your boat was used for mhouston8119? She's a beauty!

(another 'before' shot...)

Re: Captain Ron's Wanderer in Refit!

I wonder how many Formosa 51s are named "Wanderer"? We have one of these boats, by that name, in my marina here in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Rumor has it that this boat was also one of the boats used in making the movie "Captain Ron".

That's a lot of work, but it's nice to see she's getting the needed care. I saw her from the dock she was on at the Kemah Boardwalk Marina. She looked pretty good in person despite the work that was/is needed.

Look forward to more.

I heard there were three of them used too but I think I heard this one mhouston has was the main one used.

Re: Captain Ron's Wanderer in Refit!

Rhapsody,
Yep, my Wanderer was the main one used in the sailing scenes. The internal shots (nearly all) were done on a sound stage, but all the exterior scenes were of the exterior of the boat, particularly the sailing and dock ones. I have the title showing all previous owners, including the corporation who owned it during the film shooting. Three different boats were used for the movie, the initial one was destroyed, and the second I believe is somewhere in the Houston area, as is mine.

Re: Captain Ron's Wanderer in Refit!

Thanks! I moved her after I bought her to Waterford Harbor Marina, further in on Clear Lake...
