We are Canadians from Edmonton Alberta in Annapolis trying to head south. We bought a boat.....in the middle of a refit wondering what we were thinking. A plane would have been much cheaper!

Don't ask for help on this forum. I think most of us have the same disease. But take heart. You have a really solid, last a lifetime boat with a CSY 44 and all you put into it will be worth it in the long run.

Meanwhile I hear it's pretty cool in Annapolis about now but bet it's a whole lot warmer than it is in Canada.

Yes it is cool -1 celcius here tonight but supposed to warm up again tomorrow. Better than the -19 expected at home I guess.

Welcome to Cruisers Forum. Alberta is a good place to be from in the winter.. Jasper or White Ave are not that much fun when the wind howls is it?

Welcome. Nice to see another Canadian on board. We've got one more winter in the frozen north before we start the journey next summer. Hope we catch up with you some day.

Well it's that time of the year, isn't it? I cheat a bit now, the first 1500 miles (the coldest bits) we do by car. Chesapeake in November is much too cold. Still remember the year it froze at Great Bridge in November.

Hi, guys, the airplane's irrelevant; you wanted a CSY 44. So now let's try and get some perspective on the situation:

1) What have you accomplished so far?

2) Which jobs are essential to complete before leaving Annapolis?

3) Which jobs do you prefer to finish while you're still in the US?

4) What are your first season's cruising plans?

When we left, we still had items on the "to do" list. We expect that there will always be items on the "to do" list, and it won't do to take our to do list too seriously! As in lighten up on the perfectionist side. Because besides the dream, there's also what's doable, reasonably. And necessities vs. wants.

Yes, it is frustrating when you feel like the goal's getting farther away the harder you work. But where is it written that you should never feel frustrated?

If you write in here more specifically about the chores facing you, I'm sure you will read some ingenious responses; we have a few professional boat workers who are quite free about recommending both products and methods. And, there is a lot of experience out here.

That seems like a great boat. I tried to read your blog, though, and found it indecipherable, other than the standard "It's taking more time and money than we thought."

It would be great if you took time to provide a summary, and helpful to others if you kept track of projects/expenses and posted some info. I love to read these things, and have a healthy respect for boat projects, but it's often difficult to learn from the efforts of others if they don't provide the data. What was the original plan? What happened? What have you done, and what's left to do? What's the current plan?

I wish you the very best of luck with whatever your plan is.

Actually if you look at our website I have put many hours in the workshop pages explaining what we've been doing as far as projects and the why's and how's about each and have many more to put in just not enough hours in the day as many nights I work on our sites until all hours then up and on the boat again for another long day, should have done this 2o years ago. My body wouldn't be fighting back so hard.

I have been building most things custom for our boat as engineering, designing and fabricating are all what I do a lot of at home.

We knew going in that we were going to invest a lot of money and time going in but we are trying to accomplish in a year or 2 what most take 5 to 10 years to accomplish. I may have set our goals a little high but in the last 3 months we have managed to replace every system in the boat including wiring, panels, fuel systems, refrigeration systems the engine and the list goes on.

It's getting close to going in but we wanted to address esthetics as well but looks like that will be a down south project. We plan on island hopping down south for a year or so from Cuba to Ecuador including the Panama Canal and off and up the west coast, eventually just heading off on a circumnavigation. No schedule.

We're also Canadians trying to head south. Stuck in Rock Hall, MD at the moment waiting for a haul out; damn saildrive filled with water. Spending drinking money on travel lifts instead.

It's getting colder, but not Canada cold.
