Bonjour Quebec!

Hello everyone!
My wife Catherine and I are in the sell everything process to go cruising full time in 2010.
I have discovered this forum yesterday and thought it is a true "mine d'or" of info.
We live in Quebec, the french-speaking part of Canada and are shopping for a boat to head south next year.
Very pleased to join!
Marc

Hi Marc,

Welcome to the forum. I found it a couple of years ago and agree that it is a gold mine of information. Even after boating for 35 years I seem to learn something new every day on the forum.

Good luck with the boat buying process. Where are you looking, Canada, US, anywhere?

Hello Gord,

Thank you for the welcoming.
I see that you joined the CF few years ago; can you tell me if there is an active boat for sale section in it?
Where do you keep your boat?
Marc

Hi Skip,

We have a preference for US east coast which is close to home but we will go where our "ideal boat" will be!!
Are you living aboard your boat?

Hi Marc,

I was a live aboard most of the summer while I had the boat in New England. I live in FL but work for a company based in CT and spend a lot of time up there. But as it gets rather cold in the winter I just moved the boat south for the winter. Just bought it a few months back and plan on doing a complete refit. Quite a bit of the interior wood work needs refinishing or replacing so will keep the boat closer to home until I'm done with that.

If you find a boat in S Florida let me know as I can refer you to a great surveyor in that area. I ended up buying my boat in Long Island and did find a local guy that was pretty good but not as tough as my old buddy in FL.

Have you picked any brands, size, type boat for your future home?

Hello Skip,

At the beginning, we were looking at catamarans for the space and light but after visiting some, we were very disappointed with the quality in general and system installation, specially the ease of maintenance.
This year we went to Annapolis for the second time and what I have seen of the new catas just confirm that...
So we wandered thru used boat and fell in love with a Hallberg-Rassy 43. What a difference in quality compared to middle-priced catas!!!
I have heard that there is a lot of boats for sale in FL and we will probably travel there in Jan or Feb to end our shopping (unless we already own one).
I will drop you a line if I need your FL buddy!
Good luck in your refit and hope to see you on the water!

Sounds like you have done your homework already. Hallberg Rassey is a great boat. I don't think you would go wrong with that choice. If I had had a larger budget when I bought mine the H-R would have been on the list. My only concern with the H-R is most come with teak decks. I've had teak decks and love them and hate them. Will stick to glass for now.

I'm sure you will get a lot of opinions about the relative merits of one hull vs two. I would agree that, as you find, you would have to spend a lot more for a cat than a monohull to get equivalent quality. Some other negatives for me are
- limits on docking, hauling, spots where you fit
- trickier handling in tight spaces, especially with a strong breeze blowing
- they do sail flat (ie don't heel) but I prefer the smoother motion of a monohull to the jerky motion of a cat, especially upwind.

There are a lot of boats in FL for sale but also a lot in the NE. They are just spread out a little more, from NYC to Long Island to CT to RI to ME. FL 90% of the boats are in Miami/Lauderdale (close enough that they can count and one location) and Tampa/Clearwater.

Let us know how the search goes.

Aloha and Welcome aboard!
Sounds like you are finding things just fine. I always recommend going smaller than what you are looking for so will not add to your list of boats to buy.
Kind regards

Hi Skip,

We took our decision to go cruising in 2006. So we are now in the last, and most exciting legs of our 4-year plan. So, yes, we have done a bit of homework!

We are getting tired of reading, calculating and learning. We are now just dreaming of beeing seated in a cockpit. That's it!

Cata vs mono: There is good and bad on both side and after months of indecision now is the time for us to make a choice. We retire in June and it's coming fast.
I'll keep you informed,

Marc
