Sounds like you have done your homework already. Hallberg Rassey is a great boat. I don't think you would go wrong with that choice. If I had had a larger
budget when I bought mine the H-R would have been on the list. My only concern with the H-R is most come with
teak decks. I've had
teak decks and love them and hate them. Will stick to glass for now.
I'm sure you will get a lot of opinions about the relative merits of one
hull vs two. I would agree that, as you find, you would have to spend a lot more for a cat than a
monohull to get equivalent quality. Some other negatives for me are
- limits on
docking, hauling, spots where you fit
- trickier handling in tight spaces, especially with a strong breeze blowing
- they do sail flat (ie don't heel) but I prefer the smoother motion of a
monohull to the jerky motion of a cat, especially upwind.
There are a lot of boats in FL for
sale but also a lot in the NE. They are just spread out a little more, from
NYC to
Long Island to CT to RI to ME. FL 90% of the boats are in Miami/Lauderdale (close enough that they can count and one location) and Tampa/Clearwater.
