Boat Design

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and and I have a question.
What makes a boat roll down wind at sea? Full keel, fin keel, beam, or hull shape? I've heard this problem associated with a Cape Dory as well as a Cal 39. Two very different boats.
thank you for having me.

Re: Boat design

I remember hearing that the IOR era boats were notorious for this behavior. They were mostly fin keelers with overhangs and narrow sections fore and aft, round and portly amidships.

Re: Boat Design

I don't think there is any way to keep a boat from rolling going downwind. Ever heard the song "Rolling Home"? A boat will roll more if it has a narrow beam and tall rigging.
kind regards

Re: Boat Design

have marginally solved this problem over 100 000 miles.

keep the wind about 15-20 degrees on the aft quarter, pole out the genoa, staysail hard in and 1-2 reefs in the main fully out with a preventer.
