Best Old 30'-35' Cruiser
Hi all,
I have been reading the forum for a few months and have decided to get some sage advice from those in the know. My girlfriend and I are in the early planning stages of buying (in florida) and old 30-35 foot cruiser in the 20,000 US neighborhood. Our plan is to sail around the Caribbean for a year or so living aboard and gaining experience then sail to Europe. We have been looking mainly at 1970-1975 Morgans and Pearsons, perhaps because there are lots of them. I am 6'3" so cabin height is a priority.
Any and all thoughts

Welcome! The more time you spend on yachtworld.com the more you'll be familiar with the market and different models (etc.). I personally am fond of old Morgans. You always have to balance the condition versus price factor. Good hunting and welcome again.

Your price range limits you a great deal. At this level the one you find in the best shape is as good as it gets. At 20K you won't get much other than 1970's needing a fair amount of work. The 30 ft range would be the better bet. I wouldn't get too picky or specific. This isn't an easy shopping trip.

Try Islanders, Allied and Bristol. Look on eBay Motors and type in Sailboat. You'll be able to look at a lot of pictures and get an idea by the selling price what each boat is fetching.
Kind Regards,

Oh and welcome aboard! You are inviting yourself to a lot of opinions. I too like Pearsons and am unfamiliar with Morgans.

Welcome Kjl,
Enjoy shopping for your S/V. There are oldies listed for sale at $40k, but sell for a lot less. It depends on condition and the owner's desire to get rid of an expense. Dockage, insurance, and upkeep are major expenses. The purchase price is just the beginning.

I know where there is a 39 Pearson and a 30 Colombia. In your range.
Both are in the Apollo Beach area which is south of Tampa.

Hey, I'm 6'3" as well, and can tell you that everything built in the bad old days in the size range you're seeking advertised 6'2" headroom.
Think about a Hunter 37.5. I think they discontinued them in the mid 90s, but they sold a ton of them, and these boats cruised the world. It's about the smallest boat I can think of in your price range that will accommodate your height.

My vote goes for the Tartan 34c, S&S designed, centerboard so you can get into those shallower places, wide side decks, 6'2 headroom, blue water capable- but im biased

Here is a Tartan 34C I found and thought it might really be a great boat. If I were looking seriously today it would be on my short list.

Good luck on your search.

I would also include the T34c on your list. I'm 6'3" and barely brushed the liner. Plenty of room to stretch out on the berths and long cockpit benches for naps. Hull #1 just sailed from Germany to the Caribbean and will be heading up the US East Coast this Spring. (Full disclosure: My T34c is for sale. We wanted more space and the admiral wanted amenities that weren't going to be a realistic option.)
