Beginner from Boca Raton, FL

Hi! I'm new to sailing, but I am a quick learner and a strong, hard worker. I've been reading tons of books and watching videos on sailing and I would love to spend some time on a boat. I'm definitely going to take ASA classes, but I would like to get some hands-on experience first so I can get the most out of the classes. What is the best way to meet local sailors and get some experience?

A bit south of you, but Hillsboro Inlet Sailing Club in Pompano Beach would be a good place to start. Not a snooty expensive yacht club.

Looks like their site is down due to expired registration with their web host. ((

Welcome to CF Steph!

As been mentioned, a sailing club is one of the best ways to get more active... They're usually chock full of those who want to help people new to sailing... Look around for a few... The other way is as you've done, list as crew available... You just may run into the right combo that you click with... Good Luck!

Howdy!
It sounds as if the Sailing Bug has bitten you!

Books and videos can help give one some knowledge of terms and principles.

Going sailing with someone will give you a "feel for it."

Taking a class with a good instructor will give you a chance to learn skills, practice them with supervision, ask "dumb" questions without fear (as everyone is a student) and gain confidence.

I think taking a class or lessons (private or group) with a good instructor will help more than just taking a ride on a boat.

Have fun sailing!

Hello Sunny Steph - This kind of bug is a GOOD thing! 2 experienced female sailors headed to Boca for a familial visit on 1/21/15. Staying in Hillsboro. Happy to share sailing knowledge and looking to hitch a ride and crew for folks looking to do some some day sailing. Do you have any contacts for a sailing vessel? I'm looking for connections. I have ASA certs: Basic Keelboat, Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Charter.
