hey all its nice to be here ,im a begginer ,last year we moved to Westport Ct and decided to buy a sail boat i purchased a used 22 catalina 1980 sail # 9763 for 1200 ,w/o motor and bought a beautifull honda 8 hp four stroke used for 800 ,i think the guy felt sorry for me ,wespent many great hours aboard ''The Breakaway " and im looking forward to this spring .to get her ready i have lots of questions so i hope you guys and gals have lots of answears thanks again and happy new year ....Steve

My first boat was a Catalina 22 fin keeler with a pop top #2972 from 1974. Great boat and I learned a lot while sailing her for several years. I used a Johnson 6hp on her. She was $4500 with the engine included when I bought her in '81.

I also started sailing in a Catalina 22.. We spent more days sailing then we do now with our 42.. the 22 was a swing keel and every weekend we were on the water with the sheets up.. happy sailing.........
A good number of us started with the 22 so if you run into problems, we've probably been there so give us a shout........

Hi Randy,
Did you mean sails up?
Sorry - I just taught a class last night on "Parts of Our Boat" and just couldn't help myself. Sheets are the running rigging used to control the sails.
I too found myself sailing more with the little Catalina. Just raise the main, push off the dock and away I went. Could even sail for an hour in the evening with very little preparation time.

Your probably right John,
never been one to be politically correct...... my boat still has a left and a right, the front is the pointy end and the other end is the back.. and I've been calling sails sheets for going on 50 years... Guess I might have to take one of your classes..

Catalina Direct has a 22 forum... They are kind of a sticky bunch..
And John, Hawaii is not on our list for this go round, not yet anyway but maybe someday.... OhOh, I did it again, its not go round, its circumnavagation..

thanks guys for the nice welcome ,im planning on changing the the lines there al ittle tired also changing the electrical panel ,ive notice you dont need to buy a catalina one i saw in pics this guy had asnother kind .also theres a great cat web page by chip ford .youll be amased at the money he put into hes boat and the records hes kept i"Chip Ahoy" - The cost for my own hole in the ocean again thanks for everything

In his first 2 years he's totally rerigged the boat, replaced the lot from the keel to mast top and everything in between. Boat US should have been making him a VIP customer!

And that *** outboard! he shoulda bought a new oone first up with all the costs (and heartache) the used one has cost him.

LOL and then a lightning strike LOL This guy isn't too lucky! Requiring a new VHF and his 45th antenna LOL

I think for ones own sanity its best to chuck all receipts overboard without looking at how much you just put on Visa card!

Boats that size are great for learning. Try though to get in some sailing dinghies so you learn weight distribution and find force better. Most of the best sailors started out in very small sailboats.
