Post Been lurking for 3 years. Finally registered :)

Wow, when I read the title of my post it is a little scary to think I have been here for almost 3 years.... lurking on and off.

I'm like everyone else. I won't bore you with the same old story. (new guy, wants to be a sailor, liveaboard, explore foreign lands, cruise RTW, etc. etc. etc.)

However, I will formally introduce myself....

I'm a 36 year old single male. I live in South Florida, work in healthcare, have no debt, no kids, no savings, no boat and a dream. lol.

I intend to live that dream..... It's why I am sacrificing now.

Look for my posts.

p.s. this site has become a daily part of my life.

Welcome to the site. I don't know that I am officially authorized to do that but what the hey. Have you thought about getting a small day sailor in the 14-22 ft range? They can be a lot of fun, teach you a great deal, and can be bought for a song. When I got started I took a Red Cross sailing class, it was mostly Sunfish and a few Optimist dinghys but it only cost me $25 for the class.

Rich

Gasaholic - interesting name for a sailing forum. Welcome. Since you have no debt, maybe you should invest in a small Hunter day sailor as Cabo suggested. It's a great way to blow off a weekend.

No debt is a great place to start. Debt is a great dream stealer.

Aloha and welcome aboard!
Good to have you here. Start with a few books from the library if you haven't already. Good to have a basic sailing class too as Rich said.
kind regards,

Welcome aboard, I'm fairly new here as well and I have found that the help and advice you can get from the folks here is terrific.

To get you out on the water, rather than rushing out to buy something, I would suggest you contact a few of your local marinas (Where you are, there are more marinas than there are used car dealers) and offer to be the galley slave and heavy lifter for anyone who would take you out sailing and teach you how its done.

That way, you would have the pleasure of sailing at little cost and have a much greater understanding of the sort of boat you might ultimately want to buy. I am sure that for the price of a few flyers and phone calls you will be sailing pretty much as often as you want.

Welcome to CF James has made a good suggestion, join a local sailing club and sail lots of other folks boats. The experience both good and bad will be invaluable to you. Yacht clubs are always on the look out for peeps and they won't bite. They often have a good social scene too.

Another thought springs to mind, for offshore experience, make contact with your local area delivery skippers, they will often welcome an additional hand on board and most of those delivery skippers are top class sailors. Just don't expect to get paid...
