Battery Setups

Ahoy There

I am putting back together my 1968 Morgan aft Cockpit sloop 45
The previous owner let her sit at moring for about 5 years with not much
money to maintain her. After 5 months in drydock a new perkins 1408
rigging ,and extensive work on the bottom or should I say expensive work on bottom. I am enjoying the bay breezes here In SF/CA/USA. I installed a battery tender for dockside and the motor turns right over when leaving the dock but the last time we went out she was hard starting after aprox 2hrs of sailing lisning to music, used the auto pilot for a 5 min just for a test run with that not much else used .The boat has a dual battery setup non Marine and cant determan age, However in drydock I added the acid and distilled to freshen them up a little. I assume they are a least 10 years old and probably truck batteries from some flea market. The boat has a Dual battery switch as well.
Whew..
My question is Do I go with a deep cycle for #2 side which handels lights pumps ect and Go for a High cranking #1 for the engine or stay deep cycle for both sides?
Also
Should the battery switch should it be on number 1 for starting and then switch to #2
for activities while not under power?
Please give me
your feed back, Thanks.

Re: Battery Setups

On our boat, I installed two banks 360 AH X 24 VDC each LIFELINE AGM. It will depend on your use and expectations. If you are only day sailing, a house bank and a smaller engine bank may be OK. If you are off-shore or otherwise cruising time & distance, you may want more. If you are day sailing, I suggest an engine starter bank that will always be hot and use the house bank for the radio & toys.
