Baltimore, MD to Port Aransas, TX in My Flicka
Hi All,
I just purchased a 1974 20' ferrocement Ryan Marine Flicka, a gaff rig cutter.
I am flying to Baltimore tomorrow to pick her up with the intention of motor/sailing her down the Chesapeake to the ICW at Norfolk with my final destination Port Aransas Texas via the ICW. A 3+month adventure! She has a 9.? Yanmar inboard.
I need to install a holding tank to the Groco head, so a vent through hull fitting is needed requiring that a hole must be drilled in the hull along with a pump out fitting on the deck. Also I purchased a Garmen 441s and need to install a transom mounted transducer. I had her hauled Monday so she is on the hard now to have the hull pressure washed for my inspection and to make these installations if they are practicle.
1. Any current advice for the instillations?
2. Are any of you familiar with Ryan Marine and the Ryan Marine Flicka?
3. Any and all positive advise will be appreciated.
The boats new name is Wren as she had no name when I bought her!?!
Thanks,
Kevin
The proud owner of the RM Flicka, "Wren"

re: Baltimore MD to Port AransasTX in my Flicka
Kevin,
Looking forward to meeting you in Port A. We are in CC, but often go to Port A for a weekend (last weekend). We are looking to move the boat to Port A in late October, for the winter.
You might consider:
A portable head (portapotty)
A composting head (seriously)

Re: Baltimore MD to Port AransasTX in my Flicka
Kevin, If you are interested in the trip along the waterway, we just came down from the Chesapeake to Florida and posted the trip in our Beach House site. Except that you won't be able to use the Okeechobee right now. We have done the trip between Houston and South Carolina twice and that trip is posted on our Sea Trek site. Hope there is some info you can use. The composting head might be a good choice since you won't need a holding tank and you won't have to drill any holes in the boat except for the head ventilation. What is the issue with the Okeechobee?

Re: Baltimore, MD to Port Aransas, TX in My Flicka
The problem is with water depths unless your boats draft is less than 3 1/2 feet. Lake levels have been rising the last couple of weeks and just hit 10 feet. But navigational draft for the Lake route is still only 3.93 feet. Rim route is less than 2 feet. Chuck

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the welcomes and posts. Just heard from Kevin about an hour ago - he was at mile marker 0 just starting down the Roads. He had a good few days coming down the Chesapeake and is going to go thru the Dismal Swamp Canal starting tomorrow. He's certainly learning alot and enjoying it so far.
Cheers,
Jean , Kevin's wife here in Alpine, TX

Re: Baltimore, MD to Port Aransas, TX in My Flicka
Jean, You might want to pass along to Kevin, that the water levels are rising in Lake Okeechobee due to current rainfall and the navigational depths are now just over 4 feet in case he decides to take that route to shorten the distance. He should check with the Corps of Engineers, or PM me when he gets to Stuart for the latest. He did not say what his draft is. Hope he has a great trip. Chuck

Thanks, Chuck. I"ll be sure to let him know next time he checks in. He's planning to stay overnight at the "visitors center" at the Dismal Swamp State Park.
Wren's draft is 3'3" I'm pretty sure- I'll confim that when we talk.

With 3'3" draft he will have no problem on the OWW. Just be sure and take the Lake route and not the rim route. Stay in the marked channels. Going through the locks should not be a problem, the lock keepers drop lines down for you to tie up. Wish him well for us and let him know we are in Fort Myers if he needs anything when he gets to the Gulf side. Chuck

Re: Baltimore, MD to Port Aransas, TX in My Flicka
Hi Ya'll again,
Kevin asked me to start doing some researching regarding getting liability insurance on the boat. It's ferrocement so he can't get "normal" insurance but he'd like to find out about liability for it.
Anyone know any boat insurance companies who'd be willing to write that kind of policy?
He's in the south most area of South Carolina I think this evening. Haven't had cell service for a couple of days but last I heard and figuring his progress I'm thinking that he's about to enter Georgia.
Cheers
Jean

Re: Baltimore, MD to Port Aransas, TX in My Flicka
I'm back home in Alpine, Tx. Wren did a great job with her gaff cutter rig sails and 10hp Yanmar. A 90 day motorsail from Middle River Maryland came to it's successful and safe conclusion September 28 at the City Marina in Rockport, Texas where she is now in slip #6 500 miles from here. This trip was an experience of a lifetime, my bucket list item #2 at age 72 single handing her down 95% of the ICW. The most memorable experience that money could never buy happend in the marsh land of Georgia, after a 12 hr. day in the grueling sun. I was feeling my way into a gunk hole anchorage using Skipper Bob's guide book, when that awful thunk in my feet and the transducer announced 3.3' "you are aground" suck-stuck in the mud!
I was working the tiller rapidly back and forth trying to work the bow off when I was distracted by a great commotion around the stern and spouting noises. When I looked over the sides there were six large dolphin with their bodys hugging Wren's sides working their tails back and forth as they pushed her off into deeper water, WOW! And then they dissapeared.
Mission completed: close to $1,000.00 worth of charts and guide books, a new Garmin 441 GPS with transducer added before my trip and new bottom paint also before the trip. I am offering Wren for sale with these additions to the next person who wishes to experience the adventure of a lifetime motor sailing her the other direction.
Wren is a 1974 Flicka, Built by Ryan Marine boat yard.
She is a Gaff, cutter rig pocket cruser with 6.3' head room.
She has a profesionally constructed ferrocement hull with a 37 year proven history of her soundness as well as the +/-3900 mile motor sail that she just completed.
FERROCEMENT CONSTRUCTION HAS BEEN GIVEN A BAD RAP , BECAUSE OF AMATURE MISTAKES IN OTHER BOATS,SO THAT IS WHY I WAS ABLE TO PURCHASE HER FOR A FRACTION OF THE VALUE OF A FLICKA MAKING MY DREAM POSSIBLE.
She is offered to the next person the same way. So please pass on the info and my contact info as well to anyone you might know that would be interested in her.
More later,
Kevin
