Baby Steps

New to Cruisers Forum, (wanna be sailors). We retire next year and have a 40 foot Fuji available for a year or two until we decide if liveaboard sailing is for us and we want to buy our own. It appears this forum is an excellent source of information so will be accessing regularly. We hope to start off with baby steps in the Sea of Cortez as that is where the boat sits now. We do have a couple of CYA (Canadian)sailing courses and are booked for more but outside of five weeks of sailing and the courses our experience is extremely slim. We will be looking for lots of advice.
Thanks for this forum.

Terry

Welcome aboard:

What a treat for you guys to be able to sail the sea o cortez to see if you like cruising. Just remember about hurricane season and that navigation in Mexico has to be taken with care. Things are probably better with GPS. Can Ireccomend Nigel Calders "Cruising Handbook" Tells lots about what you'll need to know.

Thanks Charlie, as I understand it the boat has 3 GPS units, radar, tons of charts which I understand may not be totally accurate, wind vane steering and auto pilot. Think we have the tools just need the knowledge to use them. Will look for the book.

Thanks again
Terry

Aloha Terry,
Welcome aboard! Hope you like this forum. Got questions? Ask away! We have lots of opinions. My last boat was a Mariner 35 which is like a Fuji. Great boat. Lots of room and a good sailor.
Kind Regards,
JohnL

Hi Baby Steps:

probably already on the boat but it is worth having Charlie's Charts of Mexico to study. I've been studying (dreaming about)it for days there is alot of info in there. Depthsounder is a very important nav tool.
