Aussie Liveaboard

Hello all
Just wanted to pop in and say hi. I'm in the Whitsunday region east coast Australia and have been sailing for about thirty years. I currently own and live aboard a Ben Lexcen 40. Not that many 40 footers around with as much living space below as these (15ft beam). She is undergoing a refit at present but bad weather here is slowing things down.

Morning, Mate (or is it evening where you are?) - welcome aboard, it's nice to meet you. Is your boat on the hard for the refit? Also, do you normally live at anchor or on a buoy? Or a Marina? It just there's been a fair bit of talk about this in W Australia recently...

Hi Shaq,

Those Lexans are awesome boats, we nearly bought one but opted for a Cat instead.
Can you recommend any good places to leave my Cat on a mooring up there?

Re: Aussie Liveaboard

Hi Saucy Sailoress and thank you for the welcome. The s/v Angel Rose is currently on the hard undergoing major repairs and refit to suit long term live aboard cruising. Bought the boat about 18 months ago and had only sailed her for a few months before haulout. So sick of the boatyard but trapped by bad weather at the moment. Once back in the water I plan on sailing to Airlie beach and will live on anchor most of the time. Just love this part of the world but will not spend another cyclone (hurricane) season here. Too scary! Will head south about October and return next May. Living on the hook is my game plan though I realise it will not be easy.

Re: Aussie Liveaboard

Hello Dragon lady
Yep love the Lexcan, three big double cabins, two bathrooms, large saloon and galley and almost as much deck space as a cat. Just wish it had the draft of one

I'm not able to help you much with mooring info as much of my sailing until now has been racing on other peoples boats so have not had to worry about such things. My last boat was a Farrier Tri that I built myself, but again no need for moorings. It is now a subject that I am interested in and will past on any information I find. Mackay has no moorings at all and while there are some available at Airlie, I would not leave my boat there unattended for long periods. It is very open to the north and not suitable from the end of August onwards. There would be many more sailors looking for the same info... maybe we need a mooring minder service up here? lol... or a directory of casual moorings might be useful. Mmmm... Happy to keep an eye on her for you while I'm around the area.

Thanks for the welcome. I have 3 or 4 more lays of glass to put on the hull but at the moment it's growing green slime from all the rain we are having. It's expected to last another month!

Sure is... Just calculated how much glass cloth I need to cover her big butt. Bit of a price shock. She had some serious de-laminations.
