Are there any young sailors out there, and who owns a pilot cutter?

I recently just got my first boat, a beautiful 26ft pilot cutter. I've been dreaming of owning my own boat for years, and so she's my pride and joy. Right now I'm working on fixing her up a bit, making her shine, and then I want to get out and explore the BC coast.

I'm wondering if anyone else owns a boat of pilot cutter design. Mine is sloop rigged, built in 1968 in Cowichan Bay, BC (that's in Canada). I haven't actually taken her out sailing yet, but from what I hear the pilot cutter design is a pretty good one. I'd love to hear more about it!

Also, let's hear from some young people that are captains of their own ship! I'm 18 years old, entering into the sailing scene now. I'd love to hear from some young people, especially on North America's west coast, who have their own boats and could give me a few pointers!

Cheers,

Maya

Howdy and Welcome Aboard this forum Maya!

It is cool that you already have a boat at your age.
Nice intro too.

Good luck, fair winds and have fun!

Thank you very much!

I agree, it's a crazy story of how I got it as well. I didn't think I'd be able to get my own boat until well into my 20s. Sometimes life throws you fair winds though!

My boyfriend and I got our first boat right after my 20th birthday and his 29th birthday (our birthdays are five days apart) and it was the greatest gift we could have ever gotten ourselves. Congratulations are pursuing and achieving your goals so early, it will definitely have an advantage! Unfortunately we are in the Chesapeake Bay, so I couldn't give you any information on your boat or your area. But good luck, and happy sails!

NoQuarter79, that sounds like a brilliant story! What sort of adventures have you had on your boat since then?

I wonder if anyone has any experience with taking pilot cutters out into the 'big seas.' Has a pilot cutter ever done any bluewater cruising?

Not as many as we'd like yet, but it's only been 3 years. Our very first time sailing our boat, which was only after two ASA classes, took us 12 hours to go 15 miles, which is extremely laughable, haha. But we've definitely learned a lot in three years.

I looked up the Pilot Cutter, she's beautiful. Is she wooden? It looks like the masts are wood as well. Gorgeous boat!

Yes, she is wooden, and with a wood mast as well! There's photos of her on Maya Broeke - if you want to check her out!
