Another New Guy from Canada

Greetings. I am currently...ever so slowly...restoring a Corbin 39 that I bought in New Orleans after Katrina. I am looking forward to sage advice from others who have already made the mistakes I would like to avoid!

Hi Swaler. I too am a Canuck with a Corbin. Check out the facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/267918719952161/

I'd love to see pics of your boat. What hull number?

Cheers and welcome to CF. This a great forum. Lot's of friendly, knowledgeable people here.

Thanks kindly for all the welcomes. It is interesting how almost every time I google a "how to" boat issue, the top hits always bring you to a thread on this forum.

Welcome.
True and funny.

I like the Corbin 39. Comfy and slightly eccentric, I consider it a good "get you home" boat. Must be a story on how it got from New Orleans to Peterborough, however, and how it's going to get back into proper water.

Re: Another New Guy from Canada

It was an interesting chore getting it home from New Orleans. Towed to a marina with a travel lift, trucked to Buffalo, then put on another truck that was willing to cross the border. Biggest hassle was the marina in New Orleans was dealing with so many boats, that in order to meet height requirements on highway they took sawzall to anything sticking up too high...like binnacle, pulpit etc...that didn't make me particularly happy.

Yeah, I'm not quite sure what triggered that little discussion. I've met the minister, John Baird, a number of times and he is normally a pretty formal guy. Still, as long as he is keeping us safe from Zombies its hard not to be grateful!

Re: Another New Guy from Canada

We bought an abandoned Corbin in 2002, she had a maple tree growing from the settee in the pilot house. No kidding!

We installed new deck core, moved the head (and separate shower) to the pilot house, enlarged the fwd cabin, moved the galley, converted the icebox to refrigeration, new engine, all tanks, all wiring, watermaker, new paint, fixed gelcoat cracks (a thousand of them) epoxy coated the bottom, designed and installed (custom built at stainless steel outfitters, ontario) dinghy davit system with solar panels on top, and installed new sails. Stainless outfitters kept the patterns, so you may be able to get a strong davit system from them.

If I can help, send me a private message. I'm not online much.

Cheers.
Paul.
