As customary for this and other forums, I'll post my 'meet+greet' post.

I'm not a cruiser, not yet anyhow. I'm a big fan of OpenCPN charting software and they keep their forum home here hence my joining.

I live, at least part time, in Beaufort NC and boat around Beaufort Inlet / Cape Lookout. We have a '09 Jones Brothers Bateau 20. Mostly island hoping, scuba diving jetties, and doing a little inshore fishing time to time.

Re: Another Beaufort, NC Member

Thanks for the welcome. Pretty day on the water today, finally a break in the wind. 59* water will likely spell the start of a break in our boating season. Lots of cruisers in port last night, Beaufort Docks looked pretty well full with several beautiful yachts including a spectacular motorsailer.
Cape Lookout Lighthouse this afternoon, lots of traffic about.

Good for you. Being a little further north of you, there is not much action this time of year on the Sassafras river on the Chesapeake bay. Mostly people getting their boats ready for winter.
Welcome aboard and best wishes to you

Re: Another Beaufort, NC Member

Funny, I was just looking at satellite images of Beaufort last night; dreaming of how I could manage to move down there and find a way to live on my little Catalina 22. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait a few more years till retirement, and scraping up the $$ for a bigger boat.

BTW, I noticed three lakes to the NW of Beaufort, and when I zoomed in there was nothing but trees around them. No roads, no structures, no docks...I guess folks on the ocean don't need to sail in small lakes like we do up north.

Welcome to CF, and please post more pics.

Bill

Those lakes are more swamp than lake from what I've seen, super shallow too. We have enough shallow salt water and nice rivers around to avoid dealing with those snake & mosquito invested lakes.

Plenty of never moved sailboat around Beaufort with folks living on them if you're ever inclined. This time of year is always nice to see some of the bigger boats in port heading South for the winter.

I'd be there in a heartbeat if I thought I could get a job there. I'm a golf professional, and with Myrtle Beach just down the coast, I sure the area is saturated with out-of-work PGA professionals.

Mine wouldn't be a "never moved" sailboat. I sail at least an hour or two 4-5 days a week.
