| An Old Salt Who is Ready to Live Aboard
I am retired Navy (21 years) with more than 1/2 of that at sea in destroyers. After retiring I stood for my Chief Mate License (all gross tons and all oceans) and passed it on the second time around (celestial killed me the first time). Now after teaching in the public school system for more than 13 years (Naval Junior ROTC), I am ready to go back to sea and stay in that environment. I am looking for a boat and a few other adjustments. My present home is now Edenton, NC, USA on the Albemarle Sound. Greetings to you all.

Absolutely great question. I am looking at long distance, maybe a motor-sailer (single handed capable) or trawler. Boy, what a great question!

You'll find many here that share a lot of the same qual's as yourself. If you do a SEARCH of the forum you'll find some posts on motorsailers. I was leaning that way back in the 80's but wasn't financially set up to do so at the time. Now, I'm into the lighter faster stuff. ![]() ....................................._/)

| Registered User ![]() | It’s so cool to see this is a place where old "sea salts" gather! My hours in the water are mainly restricted to bobby around riding pieces of fibreglass, but I admire those with Navy experience. In fact, when I get a bigger boat, I am looking forward to shanghaiing a mate who just got out the navy knowing he is a sensible and disciplined person to take on as crew. Likewise with the style of boat you are after, having worked fishing I would like to get something very similar. Those who are into racing can keep the anxiety the pressures of competition creates. I just want to be at sea.

The days of competition are over for me. I am ready to focus 100% as a sailor.

Aloha Chowan, Welcome aboard from another Navy retiree. I chose sail way back in the early 70s because I knew I liked the concept so much more than burning fuel. I learned diesel systems later and like them too but only if they are installed in a boat that can sail. You have lots of boats to choose and if you go to the links after my signature you'll see a few. I always recommend something less than 35' and made of fiberglass with an aft cockpit and cutter rigged but everyone has an opinion, right? regards,
