Alternate power source

I am installing a 12.5 kw genny in my cruiser and would like to TEE into the exaust of one of the main engins. Can I do this or do I need to punch another hole in the hull.

What sort of main engine exhaust configuration do you have? Through the transom? Underwater? Stern Drives? It might be hard to keep the genny from getting flooded when the mains are operating without some soft of check valve that'll introduce more back pressure to the genny's exhaust. I don't think I've ever seen a genny exhaust plumbed into a m/e's exhaust and there's probably some other very good reasons for that. I'm sure others will chime in.

I'm no expert in this, but I would go for a separate exhaust.

Don't combine multiple engine exhausts!

According to ABYC Section P-1 (Exhaust Systems), and Title 46CFR119.430*:

1.5.7 A separate exhaust system and terminus shall be provided for each engine and generator installation.

Goto:

http://www.abyc.com/committees/P-01.pdf (page 3)

* The CFR(s) are the Code of Federal Regulations. Title 33 & some of Title 46 CFR requirements pertain to recreational boats. If you meet ABYC standards you meet or EXCEED the requirements of the CFR.

Definitely punch another hole. ABYC rules aside, you can run into a myraid of problems doing this:

1) Back flow of cooling/exhaust water from one engine to the other
2) Depending on where you "tee" in, backflow of seawater in followin seas
3) Backpresure and/or throughput capacity of the main exhaust while both engines are running

You'll have to punch another hole, or go for a dry exhaust system (which most cruisers aren't fans of)

Thanks for your help. I've retired to finish a project that a friend started but could not finish, and the drawings were destroyed in a house fire. I'm sure I will need lots of help.
