Alohas from Honolulu

Hello everyone,

New to the site and to sailing in general. I'm looking for an outfit to take lessons from here on Oahu. Can anyone recommend one? I did a web search but was not impressed by the results.

My goal is eventually to participate as a crew member for deliveries and long distance voyages. Any advise is greatly appreciated...

Mahalo,
Nathan

Aloha, and WELCOME aboard, Nathan.

Good luck on your search for instruction.
I don’t recall any CF advice, specific to Hawaii, but you might try a custom Google search of the forum here:

Aloha Nathan,
When I used to teach at the Marina at Pearl Harbor we would take all comers including civilians. Its located under the Ford Island bridge at the Aloha Stadium end. That was for basic, racing and spinnaker handling courses. Of course that was in the early 80s so I can't say what they do now. If you are military then there are MWR courses for you.
The Ala Wai and Hawaii Yacht Clubs teach basic courses through U. S. Sailing.
Hope that helps a bit.
The U of H Manoa campus has a sailing program but I don't know if they start with basic sailors.
Good luck in your search.
Kind regards,
JohnL

Thank you all for relpying to my post. I've sent an e-mail to the Hawaii Yacht Club to get their recommendation. As for the captain on the big island, i'm in Honolulu so not sure that would work out.

Thanks again!

Aqua,

Be at the Hawaii Yacht Club at 4:30pm on Fridays, ready to crew on any available boat participating in the weekly race - great oppotunity to learn, even if all you'll be doing is turning a winch. Private instruction also available at the Waikiki Yacht Club across from the HYC.

That sounds like a great time! I don't mind working hard to learn. Where can I find more details about the weekly race?

Call the HYC, see New Page 1. Under "sailing", there's info on the Friday races.

From what I understand it's all very informal - show up on time, there are always boats looking for extra crew.

Aloha, BWS
