Thumbs up Ahoy Hoy

Hi! Long time reader, first time poster.

When I'm not on the water, I get my fix by reading about sailing and dreaming about full-time cruising. I read every forum I can find, this is the first one I am inspired to register and post to. CruisersForum certainly seems to be a lovely bunch of folk. And I'm delighted to be joining in.

I don't own a boat (yet?) so my sailing time is with friends or on charters. Mr D and I got serious about sailing while living in San Francisco. We joined friends for day trips in the Bay, and did two ASA courses to get charter-ready ourselves. In addition to lots of hours I never bothered to log there, I've sailed in the BVI and in Corfu on week-long monohull charters. We had the good fortune to meet the Alpha Crucis in the Ionian, and that lovely couple were an inspiration. And they served a wicked delicious breakfast with a perfect 'flat white' (do only kiwis know what that is?).

We're living in Amsterdam now, and so far have been enjoying cruising around the canals and Het IJ in our little electric dinghy. I'm looking for a local sail club or race team to join for more time on the water under sail. Learning Dutch is going slowly, so they'd have to be willing to take me as I am, English-speaker and all. (Mais, je peut parler français. Kaj, mi parlas la internacia lingvo - malbone.)

I'm in prep now for a week cruise in Croatia the first week of July. We'll be on a Bavaria 36 out of Trogir for a week, Mr D, myself, and two first-timers. I'd be delighted to have all sorts of recommendations. I'll start a thread in the 'Europe & Mediterranean' section for more details.

Warmest regards to kindred spirits!

Re: Ahoy Hoy

Hi, All. An update for anyone looking me up... We had perfectly wonderful sailing holidays in Croatia, Turkey, and Nice. We upped sticks at the end of 2013 and now are getting settled in San Diego. Still no boat of my own. I would love to meet some fellow sailors in San Diego and have suggestions for how to get involved in local sailing.

Thanks!

BTW, I had a great experience with the charter companies I worked with. Here are my recommendations:
Croatia: Sail Charter in Croatia Sail Charter in Croatia. Ivana and Oz are the warmest, friendliest people we've met.
Turkey: Yıldız Yachting Y. Sorted us out nicely when a crew member lost a tooth cap mid-cruise.
France: Nautica Escapes Nautica Escapes. The most personal attention from Michel.
